Cumming approves annexation of land to expand hospital

Although construction is still continuing at Northside Hospital-Forsyth, Cumming recently approved annexing three properties for the hospital's use.

Forsyth County commissioners approved the annexation, which totals approximately 13 acres, following a discussion of the issue. Two smaller parcels were also approved. The measure to annex the two small parcels was passed unanimously, while the larger parcel passed 3-2.

The property, which lies to the southwest of the hospital, is divided by Ronald Reagan Boulevard. Cumming will have control of the road between the two properties. County Attorney Ken Jarrad was directed by the county commissioners to develop an agreement on who is responsible for the maintenance of roads in situations like these. The city has not yet adopted the agreement, though it was discussed prior to the annexation.

Jarrad said city officials have agreed that the measure makes sense, but they want to have their staff review it and consider the proposals the county has already made. Jarred recommended the city be given time to study the issue and discuss it at their next meeting. The matter of road maintenance is of some importance, as the city and county clashed over the matter of who was responsible for the repair of Sanders Road, which was washed away when a dam burst following heavy rains in 2013.
