Cumming kicked off the holidays with a Celebration of Lights, held at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.
The highlight of the annual event was the lighting of the 4,200 bulbs on the 65-foot Christmas tree, which sits atop the hospital. One nine-year old said it was the lighting of the tree that was his favorite thing, though a helicopter landing at the facility was no doubt exciting as well.
Most of the festival was held inside a huge tent the size of a parking lot, and included hot drinks, food, performances, craft items for sale, games, and of course a visit from Santa Claus.
One of the most anticipated performances was by the choir from the Coal Mountain Elementary School, and some of those who attended the festival were there to listen to their children perform. Among them were the Portilla family, whose son was in the choir. His mother, Danielle, was rooting for him but Mailea Portilla, his six-year-old sister, was more interested in Santa Claus.
More than 100 volunteers worked hard to make the festival a success. Most of the events, activities, and food were free. Proceeds from the sales of priced items go to benefit the Northside Cancer Institute.
Hospital officials could contact a newsletter printing company to create a letter for locals about the event. They could include photos, and urge recipients to join the fun next year.
