After months of discussion, the Forsyth County planning commission unanimously approved plans for a mega-grocery story to be built near Cumming.
Kroger Company applied to have an intersection southwest of Cumming rezoned so it could build a Kroger store the size of a Walmart. The project will feature a fuel station with 18 pumps, unconnected outparcels, and nearly 700 parking spaces. The entire parcel comprises about 27 acres at the corner of Bethelview and Castleberry roads.
A CVS Pharmacy and a Publix supermarket already occupy two corners of the intersection, and planners delayed Kroger's application twice in order to make certain the new store would fit into the community, as well as adhering to the area’s overlay standards with regard to equestrians.
Two residents who live near the site favored the rezoning, saying Kroger had been willing to make a number of compromises to make sure the store is a good “fit” for the neighborhood. Among other things, plans call for the gas station and store to sit approximately eight feet below the roadway to disguise the store's huge size.
Kroger also added an additional five spaces for handicapped parking, since nearby areas have a larger number of older residents.
When the project nears completion, Kroger could work with a banner printing company to create Banners to display throughout the store, welcoming the first shoppers.
