Forsyth County, through its Public Facilities Authority, has drawn closer to creating a charter school.
Last month, members voted in favor of having Forsyth County Schools submit its description of the projected school, and what they believe it will cost to build.
The institution is a high school, and would concentrate on developing a work force that would land well-paying jobs in the high-tech industry. The estimated cost for building the school is between $18m and $22m. About $20m would come from the authority, and the school system is considering trying to find a grant for $3m.
The school's enrollment is projected to be approximately 1,000 students, and the facility could open by the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
The Public Facilities Authority was mostly supportive of both the funding and the concept, and should decide soon whether or not to make funds available for the project.
In addition, the authority decided to encourage the county commission to have the state legislature raise the cap on the money that can be spent, from $20m to $35m. The school is the first project the authority has tackled.
School system officials might consider working with brochure printers on a booklet describing the school and its mission. It could then use the material in its efforts to obtain a grant.
