Despite some opposition, Winter Park commissioners recently voted to go ahead and authorize construction drawings to be made for the proposed Canopy, a huge campus with a price tag of $40.5m that includes an events center and a library. The vote was 3-1 in favor of proceeding.
The commissioners authorized designers to develop plans by October, after which a guaranteed maximum price will be given to Winter Park for the city’s approval.
The Canopy will be located on 23 acres of land that is already home to Martin Luther King Jr. Park. In addition to the library and event center, plans could include an auditorium with sloping seating, located in the library, as well as an outdoor amphitheater, a porte-cochere, and a rooftop venue. The plans originally called for a 50,000 square foot library, but the size has been reduced. The design is the work of Sir David Adjaye, a British architect.
The library is currently in a building on New England Avenue, and the city is its landlord, although library officials run the whole facility. However, a task force on the project recommended the city’s part in outdoor maintenance, systems, and building be expanded. Officials can use Logo Design to create a symbol for the campus.
It is expected the events center could generate over $11m in funds, mostly from weddings. The original opening date of the Canopy was to be Fall 2020, but that has now been pushed back to May 2021.
