Winter Park voters give thumbs up to library

Voters in Winter Park have approved a ballot measure that makes way for a new events center, library, and parking garage.

The projects the voters approved on March 15 would carry a price tag of about $30m. The supervisor of elections for Orange County said the measures received 51% of the vote.

The proposed facility is scheduled to replace the current Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center, which is located in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. The plans call for a library comprising 50,000 square feet, and an events center offering 85,000 square feet of space. A single-story garage with space for 200 cars.

The current library, which is located on East New England Avenue, comprises 33,742 square feet, and has not been updated since 1994.

In order to pay for the new facilities, taxpayers will pay $49 per year for every $100,000 of the taxable value of their home.

Library officials might consider working with a postcard printing company on a card for city residents, thanking them for their support. Then, as the project gets underway, they might consider a second Mailing, this time using a brochure printing company to create illustrated Booklets that show residents what the new facilities will look like. Keeping the voters informed will perhaps encourage people who do not currently use the library to visit the new space.
