The city of Winter Park will be holding several events to honor Juneteenth.
Local Print shops often assist with spreading the word around towns about such events with Flyers, Posters, and other printed materials.
The first event will be in Historic Hannibal Square for the 9th annual Juneteenth Celebration at Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. This event is hosted by Barbara Chandler and the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. The theme will be Knowing, Remembering, and Reclaiming Our Stories and it be from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm this Saturday, June 15.
This will be followed by an opening reception at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center for a new exhibit, “Storytellers in Sanford and Eatonville,” from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
Later that day the Equity Council Corp., together with the Parks and Recreation Department, will be presenting “A Night Under the Stars: Jazz and Jubilee” at the Winter Park Community Center and Shady Park. This will be hosted by LaWanda Thompson. Performing will be Daphne Cooper, Tarus Mateen, Royale, and Sam Sanders, with dance performances by Tanita Fadyeyola and First World Drummers and Dancers. This event will be from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
Rounding off the weekend, Dr. Rebekah McCloud, Smith Grant Scholar, will discuss the relationships of the observances of Juneteenth, Watch Night Service, and the Black Church at the Winter Park Library on Sunday, June 16 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
