Seminole County Animal Services was in Winter Park recently to hold an adoption event, and to show off its brand-new mobile adoption unit. The unit was made possible by a donation of more than $30,000 from the estate of Marjorie Grimmett, an Englishwoman. She directed that the funds be specifically used for pet adoptions.
In the case of Seminole County, the money not only helps find pet parents for animals already at the shelter, it also allows animals to travel in the trailer to adoption events.
The trailer has twelve separate compartments, all air conditioned, with glass-fronted doors. The mobile unit also has its own water supply and generator, and in addition to adoption events, can be used for microchip and rabies clinics, and can haul pet supplies in an emergency.
Diane Gagliano is the adoption coordinator, and says that typically when they go to an event, they can only bring dogs because of the heat. Even then, the pooches are usually in crates which sit on concrete and can become extremely hot. The new trailer makes taking animals to events easier for everyone.
The trailer has been dedicated to Marjorie Grimmett and has her name on the side in bright colors. At first, shelter employees were puzzled by the donation, until it was discovered that Grimmett had lived in Florida in the 1970s and 1980s.
