Winter Park just announced that it plans to bury the power lines that run along Fairbanks Avenue, with the work scheduled to start soon.
The city will work with Duke Energy to move the Fairbanks Avenue transmission lines underground. The project is set to begin today and is expected to take about a year to complete, as the lines on the south side of the avenue between Harper Street and Interstate 4 are buried.
The work will be done in five phases, and is funded by a $16m grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. Plans call for work to start at Harper Street, and then move west.
The project will require the construction of a pit for tunnel jacking—the term for building a tunnel by pushing prefabricated sections into the tunnel as excavators remove earth ahead of the section. The pit will be 30 feet long and 14 feet wide, and will be dug on Harper Street, which means the area between Fairbanks Avenue and Comstock Avenue will be closed for almost four months. Officials working on projects like this can use flyer printing to update residents on progress.
In addition, the city will be conducting microtunneling, which refers to digging tunnels so small humans cannot operate the machines because they are not large enough for someone to sit inside. Instead, they will be controlled remotely. Winter Park is burying the lines to protect them from extreme weather events and other damage.
