Winter Park plans seasonal cheer

Merchants in Winter Park are already gearing up for the holidays, with local organization The Park Avenue Merchants Association planning to hold the inaugural ‘Winter on the Avenue’ event

Steve McElveen, who heads the association, says merchants have noticed that people who come to the avenue to see holiday entertainment do not always stay to eat at local restaurants or shop in local stores. This year will be different however, as the area merchants are planning to hold their event the same day that the city has its tree lighting ceremony.

The merchants association operates under the auspices of the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce. As such, it has been able to make an arrangement with the city, which has agreed to close the stretch of Park Avenue from Lyman to Canton to traffic that night, to encourage people to walk to restaurants and shops along the avenue.

The event has three sponsors: the Chamber, Winter Park, and the merchants association, and they all hope ‘Winter on the Avenue’ will become a premiere event for the area; one that offers more than the tree lighting. They hope to include live music as well as a visit from Santa Claus, and expand the event to a full night’s celebration.

‘Winter on the Avenue’ is scheduled for December 4, and the merchants could have holiday Banners made up to decorate the light poles along the street.
