Winter Park gives green light to new library

On April 24, 2017, members of the Winter Park City Commission voted unanimously to execute the agreement to go ahead with plans for the new library, subject to the city’s final review and approval.

The agreement stipulates that Adjaye Associates will take the lead in the design, working with HuntonBrady Architects. The library will be built in the northwest corner of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Park, according to an article in the Park Press.

Queen Elizabeth II recently knighted Sir David Adjaye, whom TIME Magazine named one of the world’s 100 most influential people. Adjaye praised Winter Park, saying the city recognizes the importance of evolving the library to meet the needs of the 21st Century. He believes the library will function as a “critical piece of cultural infrastructure” providing a dynamic space for interaction, recreation, and shared education.

Adjaye Associates has been praised for its approach to designing public buildings. The firm’s biggest project thus far is the National Museum of African-American History & Culture, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. It opened in 2016.

Steve Leary, Winter Park’s mayor, said the city has put together an outstanding team to help build the new library, and is eager to get started. The library will serve visitors and guests for generations.
