Ballet devotees in Winter Park and throughout the Orlando area should be pleased to learn that Harriett Lake, who has loved ballet for decades, recently donated $5m to the Orlando Ballet to help it get the construction of its new headquarters underway.
The building will replace the Loch Haven Neighborhood Center, which the company currently rents from the city.
Lake's generous donation was received shortly after a grant was made by Orange County in the amount of $500,000, which the company will use to help pay for a “great hall” as part of the new $2.15m facility. The hall will offer 9,386 square feet that can be rented for weddings and similar events.
Jonathan Ledden, president of the ballet's board of directors, said the proposed new structure will meet the needs of a modern-day ballet company, and that after a team of engineers and architects studied the neighborhood center, it was decided to tear it down, rather than renovate it.
The new building is a sleek, two-story structure that will offer a total of approximately 38,000 square feet of space. The company will have its dance studios there, as will the Orlando Ballet School. The company's offices will also be located in the new building, bringing together all the organization's facilities, which are currently scattered throughout the city.
The ballet hopes to open the new facility by late 2019.
