Marina Jurica, an opera singer, recently decided that it was time for her to create an opera company. The Orlando Light Opera will give its first performance very soon in Winter Park, capitalizing on the break in the calendar that many entertainment venues take at this time of years.
Unlike grand opera, light opera, which is also called operetta, marries opera and musical theater. These shorter productions (grand operas often run more than three hours, with the longest lasting more than five) usually do not tackle the serious themes found in grand opera, and they include some spoken words. The new show is ‘The Student Prince’, and is being presented in partnership with Central Florida Vocal Arts.
The operetta tells of a German prince who is supposed to marry a princess, but instead falls in love with Kathie, a barmaid. Jurica is playing Kathie, while the rest of the cast is comprised largely of students from Rollins College, as well as the University of Central Florida.
The company will present ‘The Student Prince’ at the Annie Russell Theatre, located at Rollins College, which is in Winter Park. The show runs from July 28 through 31.
