The musical ‘Daddy Long Legs’ has made the journey south from Off-Broadway to Winter Park, where it's playing now. The local production is a regional premiere of the show.
Many people are probably familiar with the 1955 film of the same name, starring Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. The film adaptation was based on the 1912 novel by Jean Webster.
Webster's book is also the basis for the stage play, which was first developed in 2007 at the Rubicon Theatre in California, where it also had its premiere before going into production at several regional theaters in the U.S. It opened in London in 2012 in the West End, and in 2015, opened at the off-Broadway Davenport Theatre.
The musical is a charming tale that recalls the work of Jane Austen, about a witty and intelligent young orphan who attracts the attention of a mysterious benefactor, who arranges for her to attend college. He insists on remaining anonymous, and all she knows of him is the shadow she once saw—the elongated shape caused her to give him the nickname Daddy Long Legs. Shy and socially inept, he refuses to make himself known, even as her feelings for him deepen.
The show is running now, but there are more performances upcoming, on November 30 and various days during December.
