Doctors and radiologists at St. Mary’s Medical center in West Palm Beach recently had a very special patient to examine. Though very young when she passed away, she is, at the same time, very old.
The patient in question is a female mummy from ancient Egypt that is believed to contain the remains of a young girl who died over 2,000 years ago. Those studying her believe that she was between four and nine years old, as she was so young that she still had some of her baby teeth.
The mummy was scanned by a CT machine, and the results will be used by a team of 20 doctors to help determine the girl’s cause of death. It is part of the South Florida’s Science Center and Aquarium’s ‘Afterlife: Tombs and Treasures of Ancient Egypt’ exhibit, which contains a couple of other mummies and 200 other artefacts. It will be on display until April 18.
For many people, the chance to see an Egyptian mummy and to learn more about the person it contains comes once in a lifetime. Finding out the history of the mummy will add another piece to the puzzle that gives a picture of the life she might have led.
