When World War II ended and the military members returned home, there was often no formal ceremony to welcome them. In West Palm Beach, an event was held last Saturday to make up for this oversight.
A group of 65 area veterans who had participated in the Honor Flight Program landed at the local airport, and a crowd was on hand to greet the individuals. They carried Signs, flags, and Banners, and were dressed in patriotic colors to bid them welcome home. The flight was scheduled to come in at around 8:20 pm, and the public had been invited to take part in the event. Matt Willhite, who is a Captain with the Palm Beach Fire Rescue Service and was just one of those who came out to honor the veterans, remarked that he was pleased to be able to do so.
The Honor Flight program flies vets, free of charge, to Washington DC so they can visit the memorial to military members who fought in World War II, and this service is funded largely by donations from local individuals and businesses.
