The Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA) in West Palm Beach will be updating its terminal, which is 32 years old, thanks to the receipt of $3m in federal money.
These funds are part of $800m in infrastructure grants from the United States Department of Transportation that will be given to 347 airports across the country.
Gary Sypek, grant coordinator for PBIA, said that these funds will pay for projects that are already underway, both of which will not be visible to the public. One of the projects, which will account for $400,000 of the grant money, will update rainwater plans at the airport. This is to accommodate plans to replace, renovate, or build new structures on Belvedere Road in suburban West Palm Beach between Military Trail and Interstate 95. Flyer printing is often used to provide greater details about such projects, their costs, and timelines.
The remainder of the funds will replace two escalators and renovate three others. Work on these project is expected to begin by the end of this summer. Eventually, Sypek said that none other escalators will be replaced in the future.
Once these projects are completed, Concourse B will undergo an expansion at a cost of between $40m and $45m. This will eliminate crowding where there is a shared seating area among several gates.
