West Palm Beach’s Grassy Waters Preserve will soon be playing host to an event that will see canoeists take to the water for a leisurely evening of paddling.
The Sunset Canoe Fly-In will see those who participate wind their way through the marsh, and as they go, they may be lucky enough to watch some of its resident wading birds as they fly in to their roost trees for the night.
They will also stop at some of the areas where the birds are often seen during the daytime hours and have an opportunity to enjoy the quiet of the natural surroundings.
The organizers will provide all of the equipment that will be needed to take part, but they noted that, as the course will go through marshy areas with a fair amount of vegetation, the paddlers should have some previous experience. They are reminded to bring along bug spray, a bottle of water, and a hat. Flyers that let the community know when an event like this will be taking place can be provided by an area printer.
The group will meet in the preserve’s main parking lot before setting out, and the evening excursion has been planned for February 22, starting at 4:30 pm. It will be led by Cindy Bush, and more details can be obtained by visiting the Audubon Everglades website.
