Tampa fans excited by World Cup

Although soccer is the most popular sport in the world, it's still not the first choice of most Americans. However, according to a June 12th news item, Tampa fans are not only aware of soccer; they turned out around town to party during the World Cup kick-off. The first contest pitted Brazil against Croatia in an exciting game that Brazil eventually won 3-1.

In South Tampa, soccer fans gathered in MacDinton's Irish Pub to watch the game. Most appeared to be backing Brazil, and cheered and moaned alternately when the team scored or failed to do so. Marcelo Caruso, who is from Rio but now lives in South Tampa, said the team's performance was “shameful”, adding the fans were expecting better.

At the St. Petersburg location of MacDinton's, fans wearing yellow jerseys – Brazil's colors – packed the pub and overflowed into the street. Perry Anderson, a fan, described the game as “trendy”, like following the Yankees. He also noted that although soccer still isn't as popular in the United States as it is overseas, the games are exciting and the sport's popularity is growing.

MacDinton's and other similar sports bars might consider working with flyer printing companies to devise hand-outs for distribution just before similar games. They could include coupons for food or beverages that would bring people to the bar to watch the game and enjoy a meal.
