Saint Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and lovers everywhere are getting ready to declare their love for one another. The Henry B. Plant Museum will be holding a couple of events to help celebrate the holiday. Admission to the museum is $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors and $5 for children; museum members are admitted free.
The exhibit, Hearts and Flowers: Victorian Valentines will take place at the museum until February 29. This event will feature a display of Valentine’s Day cards from the late 19th and early 20th century. There will be all types of cards on exhibit which will feature cherubs, cupids with bows and arrows, hearts, roses, lace and feather decoration, dried flowers and forget-me-nots. Cards in those days were very flowery both in decoration and in prose. To some they bring back pleasant memories of days gone by.
If you are inspired by the Victorian cards you can learn how to make your own at the museum. On February 4, Heather Trubee Brown will be holding a workshop to help you create your own Valentine’s Day cards to give to a loved one. The cost of the workshop is $15 for museum members and 20 for non-members. This will give you a chance to show off you creativity.
Many people do not celebrate Valentine’s Day because they see it as a purely commercial celebration. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can either give your friends and family hand-made individual creations or you can design a card and have it printed professionally. Tampa printing companies can take your designs and create as many cards as you wish. While not purely home-made, they are not mass-produced as the many sold in card stores are.
