Tampa celebrates African arts

The first annual African Arts in the Park Tampa will be taking place here in Tampa in mid-September.

This two-day event has been created to showcase diverse African art including performing arts, visual language, creative and culinary arts, handcrafts and to celebrate African cultural heritage.

Performances on the Kijij main stage will include jazz, gospel, blues, santa, R&B and soukou with African mask artists, drummers, dancers and singers.

More than 40 nonprofits associated with African community development, causes, and culture will be passing out information about their missions, services, locations and hours of operations in the Empowerment Village.

The Soko Village Market will have merchandise vendors selling African clothing, jewelry, crafts, art. In the Chakula Village food vendors will offer authentic African cuisines such as Southern Soul Food, Carribean, and BBQ.

Corporate vendors will be getting their Logo Design, goods and services out to the public.

In the Mundundu Village, there will be spoken word and poetry demonstrations, drum making, drumming circles and workshops, head wrapping and African storytelling.
An Elder Hut will offer information on elder benefits, and healthcare geared to those over 55. The Mya Hut will offer health and wellness information from medical and nursing staff and hospitals, doulas and clinics.

Volunteers are needed for set-up, workshops, demonstration and entertainment assistance and general coordination.

African Arts in the Park Cultural Festival will take place September 14th and 15th at Perry Harvey Park, 900 E Scott Drive.
