Retailer Publix recently announced plans to build a new store in the Westshore business district of Tampa.
The store will be built on the site of the former Sport’s Authority store. Publix, which is based in Lakeland, will tear down and replace the current building once the demolition permit has been approved.
Publix was founded in 1930 by George Jenkins. There are currently over 1,250 locations, mostly in the Southeast region of the United States. Along with grocery stores, the chain also has several distribution centers and manufacturing facilities. The grocery chain is an employee-owned business and is a key employer in some locations.
Since the 2017 closure of the Sports Authority store, Publix has been eyeing the property. The grocery chain received approval to rezone the property in May, 2018. Drawings of the new store have been released showing the proposed design. Print shops can be used to duplicate the drawings for distribution to subcontractors and others who will be involved in the project. Many companies also choose to obtain Promotional Products to celebrate their grand openings.
The new store will be just under 36,000 square feet, and located on 3.67 acres. The company is anxious to complete the new building in order to service its Westshore area customers. The chain will be one of three stores in the area; currently there is a Whole Foods located nearby and plans are in place for another grocery store in the former Sears location across the street.
