During a press conference in Tampa, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that schools will not be reopening before summer.
Schools in Florida have been closed since March 16, an action taken by the governor at a time when Florida’s coronavirus count was relatively low. The numbers have gone up dramatically since then, although the curve is starting to flatten. Experts are advising that rather than slowing down, social distancing efforts should be maintained. This means that schools will stay closed for longer than expected.
The Florida teachers’ union has asked the governor to ensure that school campuses remain closed for the entirety of the 19/20 school year because they will not be able to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The teachers feel that they have risen to the challenge of conducting lessons online, and since teaching is carrying on anyway, there is no need to risk opening schools prematurely. Promotional Pens can be given to students who are learning from home.
Schools will remain closed for the coming weeks, but discussions are still being held about certain events such as graduations. Some schools are taking suggestions for how graduations can be conducted in June, assuming that the ban on mass gatherings is still in place by then. Other school districts are optimistic enough to have already booked locations for July.
