Special scholarships made available in Orlando

The Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Scholarship Program is now open to high school seniors in Orlando.

Kennedy was the first African American elected to the Orlando City Council in 1973. He gave back to the community in many ways, one of which was offering scholarships. These scholarships are available to those looking to pursue post-secondary education or college in the Fall 2024.

A member of the YMCA Metro Board, Kran Riley, said that Kennedy believed in helping students in the community to further their education. Riley said that many of these students are first-generation college students, so these scholarships enable them to realize their full potential and be everything they want to be.

Requirements for the scholarship include an overall grade point average of 2.5 or better, two letters of recommendation from a mentor, church leader, high school teachers or counsellors, and an essay of between 500 and 750 words. Proof of being accepted and enrolled in a college or post-secondary program is also required. More details about the criteria for such scholarships and deadlines can be provided and dispersed across an educational institution through methods such as brochure printing.

Applications for these scholarships are being accepted through Wednesday November 15. At least 10 scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded and announced at the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast next year, which is set to take place at Orlando’s First Baptist Church.
