What's Happening in Ocoee, FL…

Ocoee city officials move recyclable plastics to landfills

City officials in Ocoee are working to inform the public about the correct way to recycle, after admitting that hardly any recyclable waste in the city is making it to recycle centres.

Ocoee’s Public Works director, Steve Krug, admits that the clean-up crew is unable to remove all the overflowing trash from recycling bins in the neighborhood. They are reporting a significant amount of contamination in the loaded dumpster trucks, having no choice but to take the garbage to a landfill instead. Printing services can help bring attention to public awareness campaigns such as environmental concerns like these.

Many overseas markets, including China, are reducing the number of recyclables they are willing to take in from the states, opting to avoid collecting contaminated papers and plastics. City officials have identified the issue of careless recycling habits among homeowners, noting that too much time is spent on sorting out the trash into appropriate containers, before heading towards the recycling center. This does put responsible recyclers in a difficult situation.

On the bright side, Ocoee’s City Commission approved a contract to transfer its recycling services to Waste Collection, starting in January 2020. This vendor will get a hold of recyclables thrown out by the homeowners, and carry them to a transfer station in South Florida. While this is happening, city officials will educate the public on how to properly dispose of plastic bags and pizza boxes.
