City to utilize private company for solid waste services

Due to the escalating costs of waste operations within the city, Ocoee officials have decided to transfer the services over to a private company. The decision was made with a 4-1 vote at the August 20 commissioners meeting.

The operations will now be taken over by Waste Connections, Inc., which currently has the contract for apartments and commercial properties within the city. The decision to utilize the company will ultimately slow down the rising costs for residents. Utilizing the private company was the least expensive of all other options explored by the commissioners.

Companies that take over operations often face hurdles due to uncertainty over changes that may be made. Printing services, such as Direct Mail printing, can help them communicate with current and future customers to help them better understand any changes that may or may not be taking place.

Waste Connections plans to purchase city equipment used for waste services including the garbage trucks. As a result of the change, some city workers affected will be offered positions with Waste Connections. The company is interested in hiring them in order to avoid having to train new employees since the current workers are certified and know the routes.

The services will remain the same for city residents. Currently, trash is picked up two times a week and recycling every other week. The schedule will also include the one bulk pick-up day and one yard waste pick-up day that are currently in place.
