Senior affordable housing to be part of citys future

Lakeland will soon have more affordable housing available for senior citizens to alleviate the need for residential assistance among that age group.

The Housing Authority for Lakeland is constructing new affordable housing for elderly people. The Micro-Cottages at Williamstown consisting of 24 duplexes is set to open in the summer of next year. It will be located next to Highway 98 near the Lakeland Square Mall and Sam's Club. The community will have both one- and two-bedroom units.

According to Lakeland Housing Authority Executive Director Ben Stevenson, veterans will have priority, because as they get older, it has become difficult for them to find affordable housing. For their service and sacrifice, he believes they are entitled to preference.

There has not been a new residential development in Lakeland for over a decade, but Stevenson added that affordable housing units in Lakeland are full and the city needs more available space. In order to live in the new housing community, a person cannot make more than $29,400 a year or $33,600 a year for a couple. The additional bedroom in each unit is for a live-in caregiver.

Prospective tenants can begin applying for a unit in February. When it is time for individuals and families to move in, Brochures can help promote housing projects such as this.
