New childrens hospital wing unveiled

At the beginning of this month, a children and women’s center opened to the public in Lakeland.

The Carol Jenkins Barnett Children and Women Pavilion is part of Lakeland's Regional Health. It is 350,000 square feet and eight stories tall. The city planned the center for five years and it took nearly three years to complete with a cost of $275m. Those who attended the grand opening on Jnue 2 were able to see inside the facility, with the centre taking patients as of June 15.

According to Lakeland Regional Health's COO Danielle Drummond, the hospital expansion was a long time coming as children and women had to go out of the city to get health services. This is biggest add-on to the hospital in its history.

The wing has a fetal care center for complicated or risky pregnancies, and will cater to perinatal and maternal care. The Level III Intensive Care Unit for new-borns has 30 rooms and a suite for twins born prematurely. These rooms are connected through a door for parents to easily monitor the twins. Parents can sleep on the other side of a glass door from their baby in all of the NICU units. Finally, the wing has an emergency room for children with 33 private rooms. Two are for trauma cases and four are for critical cases.

Print shops often create colorful prints for children's rooms to brighten the mood of both children and parents while in hospital.
