Lakeland kids to learn what worms do

Kids are often fascinated by the natural world, and a series of workshops planned for Lakeland will introduce youngsters to the plants and animals all around them.

Polk County Master Gardeners has put together a series of workshops that will offer local families four seasons of learning blended with fun. They are for kids from kindergarten level all the way up to scholars in grade five, and are free to attend with advance registration mandatory.

The October installment of the program will be focused on the humble earthworm and the role it plays in the ecosystem. The group will discuss how worms play an important role in recycling nutrients so that they can be reused by plants, and that they are also one of the building blocks of many food chains. A Master Gardener will guide the learning, and vermiculture (the cultivation of worms) is on the agenda.

Each child who takes part will need to have a parent or guardian with them, and both generations will be able to add to their knowledge of the world around them. They will also have a chance to start their own worm farm, and Print shops will be able to craft basic instructions manuals to distribute to the participants in this type of activity.

The Polk’s Nature Discovery Center at Circle B Bar Reserve will welcome registrants for this hands on session next Saturday, October 2. It will run from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon.
