Lakeland in running for rail station

Lakeland may have a high-speed rail stop in the future.

The Department of Transportation approved Brightline's application to buy land to build rail lines from Tampa to Orlando, stopping in Lakeland. In order to complete the rail service coinciding with Interstate 4, Brightline has to negotiate with the Expressway Authority of Central Florida within 90 days.

Seven years ago, the governor vetoed plans to build a similar rail line due to cost concerns. Commissioners of the city and county politicians debated over where to put the station. City commissioners were in favor of a location on Clark Road, but county commissioners wanted it to be at Florida Polytechnic University.

The details about the stop in Lakeland for the upcoming rail system are up in the air. The proposal Brightline submitted states that Lakeland is a considered stop and the stops will be where the rail will not interfere with I-4 or other operations of the company. Noticeable adjustments to Lakeland Electric utilities are expected as well.

According to Tony Delgado, city manager of Lakeland, there is much to do but it is an exciting opportunity. The area has developed more since the past proposal for a high-speed rail line. He hopes they will value his input.
