On January 29 and 30, the Canadian Snowbird Association put on the Snowbird Extravaganza in Lakeland. The last half of the event started at 9:00 am and went until 4:30 pm.
People used to colder climates attended the two-day event held at the RP Funding Center, with many having been there for previous years’ events. At the extravaganza were vendors, entertainers, booths for additional information, and giveaways. Products on show included facial creams and scooters that leave a smaller carbon footprint.
According to Louisiana Travel Promotion Association marketing manager Charlie Waltman, snowbirds can get information on Louisiana, the Bayou State that has ties to French Canada. Vendors hailed from various other states like North Carolina, Alabama, and Kentucky.
For 13 years, Adrian Verwegen has come to Lakeland in the winter from Ontario. Speaking to The Ledger, he praised the event for the entertainment as he perused the displays. Some of the guests stay for the maximum allotted time to take advantage of the warmer climate, but they can only stay for 182 days, which is a little under half of the year. Visitors are currently working to get a visa that extends the time.
Organizations like the Canadian Snowbird Association often sell or give away promotional Pens both to raise funds for live entertainment, and to advertise their yearly events.
