Four of this year’s graduates of Florida Southern College (FSC) are Fulbright Scholars.
The graduates will go to various parts of the world as United States cultural representatives. Elise Barnes, Kylie Torres, and Leyna Stemle graduated in spring of 2018 while Fulbright honoree Natalie Aleman, who won the English Teacher Assistant Award, graduated in 2016. The Lakeland-based college had a Fulbright Scholar last year in Zoe Trout, who went to Thailand for a year.
Stemle will look into preserving sea turtles in Africa for nine months after studying local reptiles. Barnes is going to get her masters in Rennes, France in physical education and sports science. Torres is going to Taipei, Taiwan to teach English, after which she wants to study school psychology for her master's degree. Aleman is also teaching English but in the Czech Republic before joining AmeriCorps in the Florida area.
Anne Kerr, the president of the college, praised the Fulbright winners, stating that they are examples of FSC's expectations and integrity. As they represent the college, they will have unique experiences and make a difference, Kerr added.
The program was named after Senator J. William Fulbright when it began in 1946. It was Fulbright's idea to create an international cooperative program paid for by WWII surplus. It funds research in international study for multiple positions including education at all levels and graduate studies.
