The 37th annual Lakeland Christmas Parade will be happening later this week.
The Greater Lakeland Junior League will host the parade, which changes calm downtown into a colorful spirited march full of holiday cheer.
A Night at the North Pole is the theme this year, and over 100 people with around 90 floats have signed up to be in the parade.
According to the chairwoman of the parade, Chelsea Mullings, she and her staff, which will include fairies, reindeer, and elves, will aid Santa in preparing for the holiday at different areas where the parade will go. Mullings has been with the Junior League for three years and the parade chairwoman for two years. She expects as many as 50,000 residents from several communities to make an appearance at the parade.
Santa Claus and his crew are always a staple of the parade, but there will also be Smokey the Bear, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Miss Florida 2017, and the ThunderBug. There will also be a float contest for Best Community, Best Theme, Most Outstanding, Best Professional, Most Original, Best Youth, Best Business, and a grand prize All Around Judges Cup winner. The next day's Ledger will have the winners and there will be a recognition ceremony later in the month.
The event takes place this Thursday, December 7, starting at 7:00 pm. No doubt pictures of floats will find their way into local Holiday Cards.
