More than 200 local children have auditioned and will be performing in this year’s production of the ballet classic, The Nutcracker.
The Community Nutcracker is a volunteer organization that presents a full ballet to the public and local area schools, with a highly-sophisticated performance of Peter Tchaikovsky’s, Christmas tale of Clara and her beloved nutcracker prince.
Once again, little Clara will attend her parents’ Christmas Eve gala, receive the nutcracker from her mysterious Uncle Drosselmyer, and battle her brother Fritz over it. The nutcracker will get broken, and when Clara comes to retrieve it later that night, the magic will begin.
The evening will be filled with classic sounds of music such as ‘The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’, and ‘Waltz of the Snowflakes’, while on stage the nutcracker prince will wage a fierce battle with the Mouse King and take Clara on a journey through the Land of Snow to his Kingdom of Sweets. Parents will want to bring their cameras to get pictures of their children in full costumes for this year’s Holiday Cards.
Over the last 23 years, this volunteer project has donated $475,000 to charities around the area. Last year, the organization presented $45,000 to charities such as Dreams Come True, Second Harvest Food Bank, We Care Jacksonville, and PedsCare of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida.
This year’s performances will be Friday, December 11 at 8:00 pm, and Saturday, December 12 at 1:00 pm and 7:30 pm at the Florida Theater 128 East Forsyth St., Downtown Jacksonville. The Service Night performance will be December 10 at 7:00 pm. This will be a free performance reserved for clients and residents from local nonprofit agencies and nursing homes.
