Local park has busy June schedule

Hemming Park, now called James Weldon Johnson Park, will offer weekly programs as well as special activities during June.

This Saturday, June 12, runners will be queuing up for the Run for Pies. The Championship 5k will line up at 7:00 pm in near the corner of Laura Street and Monroe Street. This will be a five-loop course and men breaking times 16:15, along with women breaking 19:00, will receive running shoes. Spectators at events like this often get their banner printing done beforehand to have something to wave as their runners pass by.

The Open 5k will be for all walkers and runners, with its start/finish line on Monroe Street. Finishers will receive medals sporting this year’s event graphic design and pies will go to females finishing in under 24:00 and males under 20:00.

Along with its Live at Lunch programs on Sundays and Thursdays from 11:30 am unit 2:00 pm, and the weekly Jazz in the Park with Joe Watts from 11:30 am until 2:00 pm on Wednesdays, the James Weldon Johnson Park will be hosting the Bluegrass, Beer and Barbecue Festival 2021.

Jacksonville’s barbecue trucks will be serving barbecue and side dishes. Local breweries will have beverages for purchase. Jacksonville’s Firewater Tent Revival and Ft. Pierce’s Uproot Hootenanny will provide the music.

The Bluegrass Beer and Barbeque will be from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm at 135 W. Monroe Street on June 19. Both the festival and the concert will be free.
