Jacksonville Symphony presents Schubert, Sibelius, and Beethoven

In a few days, the Jacksonville Symphony will be throwing the Calendars into concert-oriented chaos by presenting two concerts in one day.

The first will be a coffee concert in the morning with Schubert and Sibelius works, and the second will be an evening concert entitled ‘Beethoven and the Blind Banister’.

In the morning concert, music director Courtney Lewis will be conducting the symphony as it performs Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5.

The evening concert will also be conducted by Lewis, and will feature pianist Jonathan Biss. The performance will be Biss’s debut with the symphony, and he will be playing two concertos. The first will be Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 7, which will be about 28 minutes long and will include two oboes, flute, two bassoons, strings, and two horns.

The second will be a companion piece written especially for Biss. Entitled ‘The Blind Banister, Concerto No. 3’ it was written by Timo Andres. It will be about 23 minutes long, and Biss will be accompanied by the full orchestra. The orchestra will then again perform the Schubert and Sibelius symphonies.

Both concerts will be this Friday, September 29, at the Robert E. Jacoby Symphony Hall, 300 Water Street, Jacksonville. The Schubert and Sibelius Coffee Concert will start at 11:00 am, and the Beethoven and the Blind Banister concert will begin at 8:00 pm.
