Wal-Mart opens to revive downtown Hollywood

On the site of the former prosperous Hollywood Fashion Center and Millennium Mall in downtown Hollywood, a new Wal-Mart Supercenter has recently opened. It will be opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

City officials, businesses, and residents hope the store will be able to revive the area economically. At its grand opening, Peter Bober, Mayor of Hollywood, said that he hoped there would be a new era of vitality with the opening of the store.

Currently in area surrounding the store are strip malls with a dollar store, thrift shops, and an outlet for cashing Checks.

The property was purchased in 2009 by Alberto Micha of Dacar Management, which is based in Dania Beach. Micha said at the time that the mall was lacking in activity, and therefore he was glad that Wal-Mart saw it as a site worth investing in.

Now that the Wal-Mart has opened, a Pollo Tropical and a Taco Bell are planned as, well as the construction of a TD Bank and retailers Discovery, T-Mobile, Mattress Firm, and Ross and RaceTrac, which is a gas station. Most of these businesses will be open by early next year.

The developer might consider the use of Banners in the area to let those in community stay informed of the progress of these new establishments.
