Hollywood school undergoes beautification

Driftwood Middle School in Hollywood was recently beautified, thanks to the efforts of Baker Concrete. The company created a large concrete form in the shape of the school mascot, a cardinal, where plants and flowers will be planted.

Angela Rigdon, who teaches environmental wellness gardening, said Baker employees also helped the school tick off many items on its wish list, pouring concrete aprons, and planting 280 plants. These will offer teachers the opportunity to show students how to handle planting, and well as learning how to identify and classify the plants. They will also learn to care for them properly.

Driftwood is an Environmental Health and Wellness school, and as such, teaches young people the physical and emotional benefits they can receive from planning a garden, planting it, and maintaining it until harvest. Tending plants from the time they go into the soil until they’re served as part of a meal helps students understand how important growing food is to the quality of life.

The idea for the beautification actually came from Baker Concrete. The company’s executive administrative assistant, Cristina Ruiz-Diaz, reached out to Kim Thompson, Driftwood’s office manager, offering to undertake a special project that Driftwood needed. Driftwood came to Baker Concrete’s attention because of the numerous environmental initiatives for which it has been recognized. Projects like this offer an opportunity for the company involved to distribute Business Cards, to enhance chances of future contacts.
