Patti LaBelle was born in South Philadelphia and was singing in her church choir by the time she was 10, and sang her first solo at the age of 12.
At 16, she won a talent contest held by her high school, and in 1960, founded her first group, the Ordettes. In 1962, the group won their first recording contract and in 1963, with a group now called “Patti LaBelle and The Blue Belles,” which Billboard misnamed, had her first hit. The song, “Down the Aisle,” crossed over into the Top 40, and the group's version of “You'll Never Walk Alone“ also hit the charts.
LaBelle went solo in 1977, when she released her debut album. In 1982, she appeared in “Your Arms Too Short to Box with God” on Broadway, and also that year, she and Grover Washington performed “The Best Is Yet to Come,” which brought her first Grammy nomination. She has won two Grammys, among numerous other awards and nominations, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.

“ . . . she's just too good of a singer to ever ignore. . . .”
