Comedian/YouTuber coming to Doral

A young woman who has found comedy in tragedy is coming to Doral.

Anna Akana (full name Anna Kay Napualani Akana) appeared in various media including the TV series “Awkward,” and the animated TV series “Big City Greens.” Her film credits include “Ant-Man,” “Hello, My Name is Doris,” and “Dirty 30.” She has a clothing range, Ghost & Stars, and authored “So Much I Want to Tell You: Letters to My Little Sister,” which she published in 2017.

The defining experience of her life was the loss of her sister. Several months after this, she saw Margaret Cho on Comedy Central and laughed for the first time. She understood that comedy might be a way to help her move on, and decided to pursue it seriously. She started performing stand-up at 19, but found she had panic attacks appearing on stage, so she switched to YouTube. She has since returned to the stage.

On her YouTube platform, she and Megan Rosati formed Cat Benatar, a comedy music duo, and she creates both documentary and comedy videos. A review says:

“ . . . this is an impressively light and accessible show on challenging topics.”

Anna Akana will be appearing at the Miami Improve Comedy Theater in Doral on December 5. Local events like this can be advertised with handouts, which organizers may obtain from printers who use flyer printing.
