Janet Jackson, the youngest of the Jackson family siblings, has come into her own. She first came to public notice in the 1980s, when she worked on television, first as Penny in “Good Times,” and later in “Fame” and “Diff'rent Strokes.” She made the move to the music industry in 1982.
She worked hard, but her breakthrough did not come until 1987, when she released her album “Control.” Five singles off this album made it into the Top 10, and critics noted that this effort, her third studio album, finally found her:
“. . . moving out of the gargantuan shadow of her brother Michael and on to the business of making her own classic pop album.”
The review continued by saying the the album's real genius was in marrying her vocals, which were described as “self-assured,” with experienced record producers Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam. The number of singles that reached the charts from this one album meant that Jackson was on the charts for almost two years. She never looked back.
