On October 26, local officials and administrators from the Jackson Health system got together and broke ground in Doral for a new medical facility.
The new campus will be located at 7800 Northwest 29th Street, west of the Palmetto Expressway. The facility will also serve residents of Sweetwater and Miami Springs, which are neighboring communities.
Features of the new campus include an acute-care, 100-bed hospital, to be known as the José Milton Memorial Hospital. Also included are medical clinics, medical offices, a children’s clinic for ambulatory patients, and an emergency department. The project in Doral eventually will cover 27.3 acres, in what is known as a ‘medical desert’; the term for an area where there are few medical resources, but which has thousands of commuters coming to work each day, and developments bringing in new residents.
The new hospital will be part of the Jackson Health System, the public network of hospitals in the Miami-Dade area. The development is made possible by a $10m gift the hospital received from the Jose Milton Foundation. According to Keith Tribble, CEO of the Jackson Health Foundation, this is the largest single gift it has ever received.
Aristides Pallin, who will serve as vice president of the new hospital, said putting the hospital in Doral is ideal, because it will bring services to residents where they live.
