Since gowns for special occasions are often very expensive and worn just once, Doral entrepreneur Viviana Alvarez has found a solution to this problem
Alvarez recently opened a shop where women can rent these dresses for just special occasions.
She got the idea when she was shopping for a dress for a special occasion, and could not find anything she liked at a reasonable price. She already had formal gowns at home in the closet, gathering dust, and realized there was a void she could fill.
‘Tonight We Dance Medellin’ was therefore opened in Alvarez’s native Colombia, and was a shop where women could find and rent brand-name, red carpet dresses, instead of buying them and then putting them away never to be worn again.
With the Medellin location doing well, Alvarez decided to open a second location, this time in Doral, making her first South Florida location. Her shop comprises nearly 1,300 square feet, and the opening featured a red carpet show of fashions.
Alvarez acknowledges the success of online shops such as Rent the Runway, but says her enterprise is different because customers can actually come in and try on the gowns, and have alterations made if necessary.
