The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has awarded Doral a grant to fund a new route of the Doral Trolley.
The route to Florida International University (FIU) is a demonstration project of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan. The grant was in the amount of $260,000 annually, for as much as a three-year period.
Doral’s proposal was only one of those submitted to the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization Governing Board. The board approved it as one part of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan Demonstration, and it is considered a top priority in the county. The priority for the county aligns with that of the grant cycle of Florida’s Public Transit Service Development Program, which promotes demonstration projects of new transit systems throughout the state.
The route to the university is important because it allows thousands of faculty, students, and staff that live in Doral an affordable and convenient way to get to the school, according to Juan Carlos Bermudez, the mayor of Doral. He went on to say that solutions such as the new route are ones he is committed to exploring, because they will help ease traffic congestion.
