Recently, the county commissioners for Miami-Dade gave unanimous approval to a resolution to implement a pilot program in Doral that would utilize one-way roads and/or reversible lanes in the city.
Reversible lanes are those where traffic can go in either direction, depending on how the lane is marked. Such reversible lanes are common in many cities, and are used to help ease traffic snarls during rush hour.
The feasibility study will be funded and conducted by the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The MPO plans to work with Doral to find the best place to implement the program, and will study that area for 90 days.
Doral suggests the study be centered on Northwest 25th Street to the west of 87th Avenue, mostly because it carries a great deal of traffic. In addition, there are no medians with grass or trees to block an observer's view. The MPO should be able to present the county commissioners with the results of the study in early June. At that point, the county will decide which streets to use in the pilot program. The results of the pilot program will then determine if reversible lanes will be implemented permanently.
Doral officials might consider working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for residents to explain the program and what it could mean for the city's future.
