The Doral Police Department is trying to solve the problem of using cellphones while driving by adopting a state program.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has begun its 2015 awareness campaign, known as ‘Put It Down Driving Distracted’. This will be run in conjunction with Doral's program, known as “Save Lives, Dnt Txt & Drv!”
Distracted driving is a serious problem nationwide. In order to combat the increasing menace, the U.S. Department of Transportation started a nationwide effort to end the practice of driving while distracted, including urging states to adopt more rigid laws to combat the misdemeanor.
Florida recognizes the following categories of driver distraction: electronic communications like cell phones; other electronics, such as navigation systems; distractions inside and outside the vehicle; texting; and general inattentiveness. A state statue makes it illegal to text and drive in Florida.
Doral kicked off the awareness campaign in August, with the official start taking place September 3. Flyers and Posters designed to raise awareness were distributed, and a number of major roadways in the area are greeting motorists with an electronic board displaying the slogan.
The city could build on these efforts by working with a postcard printing company on cards to mail to all residents about the problem. The Doral Police Department Neighborhood Resource Unit will run the campaign.
