According to the U.S. Census Bureau, The City of Doral has exceeded the 50,000 mark in population.
The figures, released in late May, show the city’s population officially at 50,213. In addition to bragging rights for the 10-year-old city, there are a variety of other perks associated with attaining this milestone.
City leaders point out that hitting the 50,000 benchmark will enable Doral to seek a seat on the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization’s governing board. This, in turn, would give the city more input in future large-scale transportation projects. Also, cities with 50,000 residents, have more grant money made available to them.
Jose Olivo, Doral Interim City Manager, said that neighborhood and park improvement projects could be speeded up with the help of grants. One area in which additional funds would be especially appreciated is the extending of the 25th Street viaduct all the way to the Florida Turnpike. Currently, the extension is scheduled to extend the bridge to the east of 82nd Avenue. Continuing the project all the way to the Florida Turnpike would allow trucks to traverse Doral without creating congestion on city streets.
