An executive from Major League Soccer and representatives of David Beckham's group met with Doral officials recently to talk about the possibility of locating an MSL stadium in the Miami suburb.
Juan Carlos “JC” Bermudez, the mayor of Doral, told members of the city council about the discussion at a recent council meeting. Sitting in on the meeting were Mark Abbott, deputy commissioner of the MLS; Jose Mas, a partner in the Beckham group; and David Martin, a developer who owns the land where the proposed stadium could be located.
The property under consideration is a 24-acre site at 7777 NW 41st Street, where Pepsi once had a distribution center. However, other sites in the area are under consideration, particularity the publicly-owned Melreese Golf Course in Miami.
Emilio Gonzalez, the city manager of Miami, has stated he will not consider any plan unless it has some financial benefit to Miami, and also offers public space within the new soccer campus. It's thought that if the MLS decides on Miami, it will build the stadium on some part of the golf course.
Ana Maria Rodriguez, Doral's vice mayor, believes it will be easier to get approval for the stadium in Doral though, since no public money or facilities would be involved. She added it would fit in with plans for the city's continuing development.
Officials could share matters like this with residents by working with a flyer printing company on a mailer for the local area.
