The Doral City Council recently approved unanimously several construction projects it hopes will ease the city's traffic problems. Construction will start in 2017.
In one instance, the city has agreed to work with the Florida Turnpike Enterprise to construct a flyover ramp between the Florida Turnpike and Northwest 117th Avenue. The ramp would lead to the northbound lanes of the superhighway from the avenue, giving trucks direct access to the turnpike.
In addition, the council agreed to construct a pedestrian bridge over Northwest 41st Street. This would connect the south and north halves of Turnpike Trail. A ramp for local traffic would also be built on 117th Avenue.
Doral's city transportation adviser, Joan Shen, notes that the city is essentially divided in half by Doral Boulevard, with one half comprising commerce and industry, and the other half dedicated to residences and retail shops. At present, heavy trucks try to make left turns onto Doral Boulevard, slowing traffic in the area. The new ramp would enable truckers to avoid the main surface streets and go directly to the Turnpike.
The total price of the projects is $15.6m, but Doral will only have to pay $3.2 million, with the rest of the funds coming from the Florida Turnpike Enterprise.
