Doral has worked hard to be named as a winner in the All-America City Award contest, and this year, it earned that recognition.
The award is given by the National Civic League to communities that address local issues successfully by leveraging innovation, inclusiveness, collaboration, and civic engagement in the effort. Communities that wish to be considered need to apply to the League. Doral considered that the initiatives and projects it has been undertaken recently, with regard to promoting meaningful change, collaboration, inclusivity, and health, made it appropriate for the city to apply. More than 500 cities submit applications every year.
After sending in the application, the city put a presentation together, selected members for the team to represent the city, and set up the logistics for the trip to Denver. A total of 25 volunteers, representating a community cross-section, went to the meeting. Members of the team included the mayor, vice-mayor, three business owners, six residents, and representatives from nearly every department in the city. After they made the presentation, the team also participated in a question-and-answer session. The participants rehearsed 10 times.
At the event, Doral's team members enjoyed workshops, receptions, panel discussions, opportunities to network with teams from other cities, and watched others make their presentations. Their efforts paid off, as Doral was named a silver recipient. Graphic design can be used to incorporate honors like this into official symbols and materials.
